The Expanded Consequence Argument and Humean Compatibilism

چکیده
Humean compatibilists argue that determinism is compatible with leeway freedom. They refute one of the premises consequence argument we have no choice about laws nature, and they do this by arguing nature does not prevent us from doing otherwise necessity since are just regularities. One humean compatibilists, Bernald Berofsky, starts off his critique premise pointing out standard fails to deal relationship between physical mental. In order overcome deficit, he builds expanded argument, argues even has a corresponding false premise, namely matter what do, sentences representing true. At same time, accepts two supervenience theses: (i) (ii) physicalism, especially thesis mental properties strongly supervene on properties. article, I these theses, together reasonable inference rules, entail cannot choose than actually do. conclude Berofsky's defense compatibilism because would succeed without abandoning either or physicalism.

A flawed conception of determinism in the Consequence Argument
According to the Consequence Argument, the truth of determinism plus other plausible principles would yield the conclusion that we have no free will. In this paper I will argue that the conception of determinism typically employed in the various versions of the Consequence Argument is not plausible. In particular, I will argue that, taken most straightforwardly, determinism as defined in the Co...
متن کاملChance and Necessity: from Humean Supervenience to Humean Projection
This paper attempts to develop a projectivistic understanding of chance or objective probability or partial determination. It does so by critically examining David Lewis’ philosophy of probability and his defense of Humean Supervenience, building thereupon the constructive projectivistic alternative, which will basically be a suitable reinterpretation of de Finetti’s position. Any treatment of ...
متن کاملPart Two: Logical Consequence ≠ Necessary Truth Preservation 1.1 Meta-theoretic Argument #1: the Gödel/tarski Argument
I suspect that this paper is written in a way that doesn’t reflect how Field actually came to the views he has about the normativity of logic. It seems likely to me that first (i) Field convinced himself that the relation of logical consequence could not be (even co-extensional with) the relation of necessary truth preservation (NTP), for reasons he lays out in PART TWO of the paper, then (ii) ...
متن کاملA Humean Theory of Choice Of which Rationality May Be One Consequence
Although David Hume’s place within the history of economic thought remains undisputable, his importance regarding the birth of what was to become the theory of choice has seldom been emphasized. Concerning recent decades, J.A. Schumpeter bears some responsibility in this situation: “[Hume’s] economics”, he said, “has nothing whatever to do with either his psychology or his philosophy” (Schumpet...
